Referral Review & Process

Submitting a referral to Indiana Guardianship Services, Inc. initiates a structured review process. Guardianship services require court involvement and cannot begin until a formal hearing and appointment is made. The following outlines what typically occurs after a referral is received.

Intake Review

Once a referral is submitted, Indiana Guardianship Services conducts an internal review to determine:

  • Appropriateness of guardianship

  • Eligibility for VASIA or private-pay services

  • Court jurisdiction

  • Organizational capacity

  • Whether additional documentation is required

We may contact the referring party for clarification or supplemental information during this stage. Submission of a referral does not guarantee acceptance. While we strive to complete intake reviews as promptly as possible, we cannot guarantee a specific timeframe. Review timelines may vary depending on current caseloads, county-specific waitlists, and staffing capacity.

Court Involvement

Guardianship requires appointment by the court. If the referral is deemed appropriate and capacity is available, the matter may proceed through court filing and judicial review. Indiana Guardianship Services does not assume legal authority until formally appointed by the court. Court timelines vary and are determined by the judicial process.

Assignment Process

If appointed by the court, Indiana Guardianship Services, Inc. assigns a designated client manager to oversee the case. The assigned manager is responsible for monitoring the case, assisting the individual with decision-making when possible, and providing consents as authorized by court order. An intake assessment is completed, and ongoing documentation and case setup procedures begin. The assigned manager maintains communication with service providers, monitors the individual’s living environment and care, and ensures decisions reflect the individual’s preferences and best interests within the scope of court authority.

In addition to guardian oversight, a Client Advocate conducts regular monthly visits to provide consistent presence, monitor well-being, and support advocacy. For individuals served through the VASIA program, a trained Volunteer Advocate may also be assigned to provide additional companionship and support when appropriate.
