Volunteer Advocate
Requirements:
-
Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and have a reliable vehicle,
-
Commit to a minimum of twelve (12) months,
-
Pass a background check denoting no criminal history involving felony or misdemeanor charges related to illegal use of property/funds or any form of abuse towards a person,
-
Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills,
-
Complete a Volunteer Advocate Application (below),
-
Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior, ​
-
Complete an orientation and training with the Volunteer Coordinator,
-
Communicate (e.g., phone, in-person, text, or email) monthly with the Volunteer Coordinator, and
-
Attend and participate in at minimum one in-person supervision sessions.

Responsibilities:
-
Volunteer Advocates visit with their paired client at minimum of one (1) hour a month, which can be broken into smaller visits (e.g., twice a month for a half hour each) pending on the client and Volunteer Advocate's schedule.

Engage in client-centered activities (e.g., conversation, games, walking, gardening, etc.) based on interest and abilities.
-
Maintain communication with the Volunteer Coordinator to regularly check in on how the Volunteer Advocate is doing regarding support and needs along with how the client is.

Document interactions with clients, care team staff, and miscellaneous communications as they relate to the client. If you didn’t document it, it didn’t happen!
Volunteer Guardian
Requirements:
-
Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and have a reliable vehicle,
-
Have completed the Volunteer Advocate role for a consecutive twelve month period,
-
Commit to a minimum of twelve (12) months,
-
Have a reliable vehicle,
-
Pass a background check denoting no criminal history involving felony or misdemeanor charges related to illegal use of property/funds or any form of abuse towards a person,
-
Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills,
-
Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior, ​

Complete an orientation and training with the Volunteer Coordinator,

Communicate (e.g., phone, in-person, text, or email) monthly with the Volunteer Coordinator, and

Maintain communication with the Volunteer Coordinator to regularly check in on how the Volunteer Guardian is doing regarding support and needs along with how the client is.

Document interactions with clients, care team staff, and miscellaneous communications as they relate to the client. If you didn’t document it, it didn’t happen!

Make care-related decisions with and on behalf of the client.
-
Attend client meetings, including medical appointments when needed, taking notes to use for documentation and follow up.
-
Aid in applying for different government assistance programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and Veteran's Affairs. If the client is already receiving assistance, the Volunteer Guardian is responsible for maintaining the benefit(s).

Attend court hearings and provide testimony as it relates to the client's case, as needed.

Maintain the client's online Microsoft and SEM Applications charts, including areas of medical, financial, and legal documents. Note: Volunteer Guardians do not handle client financials but receive and review records for accuracy and appropriateness.
