Volunteer Opportunities
Build Connection. Provide Advocacy. Make a Difference.
Volunteers play an important role in supporting individuals served by Indiana Guardianship Services, Inc. Through regular visits and relationship-based advocacy, volunteers help ensure that individuals under guardianship are seen, heard, and supported. Volunteer roles are structured, supported, and designed to complement professional guardianship services.
Volunteer Roles
The Volunteer Advocate and The Volunteer Guardian
Volunteers at IGS begin their involvement as Volunteer Advocates. This role focuses on building relationships, providing companionship, and supporting individuals who may have limited or nonexistent personal support systems. Through regular visits and consistent presence, Volunteer Advocates help reduce isolation and ensure individuals remain seen, heard, and supported.
With additional training, experience, and court involvement, some volunteers may later be appointed as Volunteer Guardians. Volunteer Guardians take on a more formal role, working under court appointment to support decision-making for individuals when appropriate and necessary. This transition occurs thoughtfully and only when it aligns with the volunteer’s interest, capacity, and the needs of the individual served.
Both roles are grounded in advocacy, respect, and ethical practice. Whether serving as a Volunteer Advocate or Volunteer Guardian, volunteers play a meaningful role in supporting individuals who may otherwise lack consistent personal connection, ensuring dignity, stability, and compassionate oversight remain at the center of care.
